I had just rung the harmonic bowl. You know, that satisfying ‘diiiiiiingggggggg’ that signals it’s time to take a breath, settle in, and drift into a calmer state. My audience was closing their eyes, breathing in that first deep inhalation, as I began leading them through a soothing “so-hum” mantra.
“So…”
“Hum…”
And just as we were slipping into that beautifully relaxed space, almost right on cue—
**BOING.**
The Captain’s voice crackled over the speaker system, nearly in harmony with my “hum.” He began his announcement with a casual, “So…” and I swear, I almost thought he was in on the session! Then he added a thoughtful “hmmmmm,” which, honestly, made it sound like he was joining us in spirit. Maybe he was manifesting, or maybe he was just tuning into another perfect day on deck 16—hard to say.
Rolling with the waves and the announcements is all part of the fun when you’re sharing mindfulness at sea. There we were, flowing in meditation, and suddenly the entire ship was in our collective state… or at least that’s how it felt. The Captain, unknowingly, had his own *so-hum* moment with us, and I couldn’t help but laugh at the cosmic timing of it all.
Being n Edutainment speaker on a cruise ship is a passion of mine because it’s like a dance—you roll with everything from the ocean swells to the impromptu poolside bingo calls. And that unpredictability? It’s part of the magic. One moment you’re guiding everyone to inner peace, and the next, you’re all reminded of a delightful lunch buffet awaiting on deck.
But for me, it’s about those tiny moments. Like when a guest comes up later to say they slept better, jet lag finally gave up, or they finally gave themselves permission to just *be*. It’s knowing that even with the interruptions, a few tips can ripple out, helping folks embrace the simple power of stillness.
As I always say, don’t just do something—sit there! Even if the Captain might have other plans.
