Andromeda's Rock

Perhaps this legal obsession for logical, factual conclusions is the driving force behind our new thirst for Reality Television. Escapism. A chance to compare our lives, assumptions and conclusions with that of another ordinary guy.

Or perhaps this is similar to the historical hunger for tales, and mythology, I muse. Stories based on some al evidence – like our new found reality based TV. Selling New York, and House Virgins, Staging and Home Repair shows. Based on Facts. Yet the fictional component raises the entertainment value, making the stories easier to believe, comprehend, and maybe swallow?

Andromeda is just a myth – a story of a maiden, whose proud mother boasted of her daughters great beauty, thereby upsetting the sea God who ravaged the shores, until Apollo dictated the virgin girl be made a sacrifice to appease the God. Tied naked to a rock, Andromeda was sure to die until Perseus came to her rescue. Later at their wedding, (to her hero) another quarrel ensued resulting in a previous suitor being turned to rock. Just like reality TV – kinda true – but Really? Seriously? Until… there in the Mediterranean Sea – I gaze, at her Rock. And in New York – we turn the key and enter the condo.

A picturesque spring night, in a picturesque setting, in a picturescque city … lately I have found myself humming jingles, choruses, and musical nursery rhymes. All signs of happiness and joy derived from living in a beautiful setting, amongst fascinating persons, alive with creativity, stimulation life and prosperity.

Which leads me to the question – if you could move anywhere in the world, and still sell Real Estate – where would it be? And that, my fellow Rainers, is the beauty of our training and licenses – the ability to transfer our knowledge to other countries, communities and neighborhoods.

If you can Dream it….in 2011 – it seems, the sky is no longer the limit!

Racing through life as a workaholic, takes time, energy and dedication! As a self-professed workaholic I succumb to a restrictive life of work before pleasure. A task oriented individual believing in cliché’s and adages that condemn play time and exalt To-do Lists. When my head hits the pillow at day’s end, I smile with satisfaction when there are more ‘done’ tick marks on the list then carry-over items. Please don’t misinterpret this to mean I don’t make time for, or enjoy, leisure or self-indulgent activities, because I do. At the allotted time – and on my schedule. I am a successful, accomplished woman with hundreds of business associates and friends. My life is complete, I am happy.

So why am I enrolled in a Travel Journaling class with an assignment of ‘strolling through the market’ for an hour and a half. Seventy unassigned minutes during the prime time of day. Instructed to not buy anything, eat anything, talk on the cell phone or use the time in any productive endeavour. To listen, smell, see and hear. Awaken your sensory nerves and enjoy the morning.

Anxiety quickened my heart beat as the all too familiar palpitations reminded me who is boss of this walking organ. Then the brain kicked in with the usual world be, should be, could be questions. And just in case I wasn’t paying attention a signal was sent to the endocrine system to begin producing copious amounts of sweat and adrenaline. Breaking rule number one I headed to the coffee truck, gazing enviously at the mom and daughter consuming the most delicious smelling bacon and eggs from a paper plate.

I settled with my double double coffee next to two other students, obviously not concerned with breaking the rules this early in the game either. Phrases from ‘The Jolly Green Giant’ drifted on the air as the red headed Harpist strummed her mid sized instrument ‘Early one morning, before the sun was rising’. Look up, Look way up – I chimed in smiling at my cohorts, envisioning the TV show from my childhood.

Playtime had arrived, and today, thanks to a whimsical fancy of enrolling in writing course at the University of British Columbia I was invited out to play.

Attempts to strike up political conversations are met with blank stares, disinterested comments or non committal ‘oh, yeah – who’s the guy you are backing…’ followed by ‘it’s best not to get involved…’ advice.

After two years of innocent bliss in my choice community, today I feel the first grains of doubt creep in. Will I be comfortable here? Do I fit in?

To a community where at the last municipal election only 11% of elegible voters bothered to cast a ballot? Is this because they are deliriously content with the current officials – or just too apathetic or uneducated or _________ fill in the blank – to care? Should I be concerned, try to change their views, or slip into an equally semi conscious state of nonchalance.

If you can’t beat them .. do you join them?

Apathy

I often read about the wonders of connectivity, networking, uniting, and referring. How being a Rain Maker can change your profitability in the Real Estate Market. Lots of success stories, remarkable, and true. Exciting stuff! My Active Rain story is slightly different. It is a story about a cow.

And a Rain Maker and good friend Robert Twaron. I am not sure how we found each other, or if he found me, or I found him first – but somewhere, somehow Robert and I connected and started reading and commenting on each others writings. A prolific blogger and creative writer, I was drawn into Robert’s stories of Texas, homesteads, relocation’s and yes – his cows. Not just any cows, but special Wagyu Beef Cows.

It was around about this time that my 4 year old daughter called me from Thompson Manitoba to declare she had started Lariat practicing, and was wanting to someday have a pet cow.

“But what would you do with a pet cow, Abby?” Gramma Sharon politely asked. Abby paused, momentarily, then declared in the self righteous, proud voice that only an innocent child can muster “I’m gonna lasso him, hog tie him, tattoo him and deworm him, Gramma.” “Every day, Abby?” I responded incredulously. “No, Gramma!!” Abby scolded “just when I am practicing!! Mostly I will just play cow with him.”

And that is how my Active Rain success story took flight. An email, a phone call, an excited declaration – and a promise. In the spring of 2012, a Wagyu cow will be born, and at 3 months of age, when it is around 60 lbs, he will put him/her in a dog kennel, buy a plane ticket to Manitoba – and Abby, my granddaughter will have her pet cow.

That is correct – 42 excellent candidates have allowed their names to stand in a bid to be my elected officials. And therein lies my dilemma. Not being a statistician – I am unable to compute the variables available whith so many persons running and each registered and eligible voter being given 8 choices. In my mathematical jumble of comprehension I am able to deduce the most popular candidate may take seats 1, 2 and 3 … but then name familiarity or alphabetical listings may come into play.

Given a list of 42 names, and the encouragement to select 8 – what are the chances that the 8 best candidates will rise to the top? It boggles my mind to try and figure it out.. but I cannot help but reason it may be the 2nd or 3rd tier candidate that will win – as the top contenders will be split amongst family and friends, whilst the ‘he’d be OK, or I saw her sign on the boulevard’ candidates may be everyone’s 6th or 7th choice – thereby making them the ‘popular’ vote.

So who wins? Maybe the mediocre candidate? Or the one who spends the most time DRIVING THE VOTE?
